En | "Sexual behavior in photo-stimulated male goats decreases due to high environmental temperature and low relative humidity in the Comarca Lagunera of Mexico. By Luis Antonio Sifuentes Meléndez to obtain the degree of Maestro en Ciencias Agrarias. Universidad Autonoma Agraria Antonio Narro. Thesis director, Ilda Graciela Fernández García. The objectives of this study were to determine, i) whether the frequency of sexual behavior of photo-stimulated males varies through 24 h/day and, ii) whether the ambient temperature and the relative humidity affect their expression. Six bucks of approximately 3 years old were submitted to a photoperiod treatment of artificial long days (16 h light and 8 h darkness per day for 2.5 months). Thereafter, males were exposed to ovariectomized females once a week during non-breeding period (March and April) and their sexual behavior was recorded for 15 min at 2 h intervals along 24 h/day. The ambient temperature, relative humidity and body temperature was recorded in each behavioral measurement. Plasma testosterone concentration, sexual behavior, ambient temperature, relative humidity and body temperature were analyzed using a generalized equation estimation procedure. Plasma testosterone concentrations differ significantly over the experimental period (P < 0.0001). Nudging and anogenital sniffing were expressed with highest frequency from 08:00-12:00 h (P < 0.0001). The frequency of flehmen and penis unsheathed were highly variable during the behavioral measurement (P < 0.0001). The highest ambient temperature was recorded from 14:00 to 18:00, while the lowest relative humidity was recorded at the same hours (P < 0.0001). The highest body temperature was at 18:00 h and the lowest was at 06:00 h (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, photo-stimulated male goats showed variation of sexual behavior through 24 h/day exposed to ovariectomized females, and these sexual activities were negatively affected by the high ambient temperature and the low relative humidity throughout the study" | es_MX |
